Closing of the Bones Ceremony
A sacred space to be held, honored, and gently gathered back to yourself.
There is a moment after birth that few people talk about—the quiet after the intensity, when your body and spirit may long to be cared for, witnessed, and held.
Pregnancy and birth are expansive experiences. Your body opens, your identity shifts, and your attention moves outward toward the new life in your arms. Closing of the Bones offers an intentional pause within that transformation: a time to honor what you have moved through and gently welcome yourself home.
This traditional postpartum ceremony is an invitation to slow down, reconnect with your body, and feel supported as you move into the next chapter of your journey.
What Is Closing of the Bones?
Closing of the Bones is a ceremonial postpartum practice rooted in traditional forms of care found across Latin American cultures and other communities around the world.
Using grounding practices, nurturing touch, and the gentle wrapping of the body with cloth, the ceremony symbolically and physically supports the transition from the openness of pregnancy and birth toward a feeling of being gathered, centered, and whole.
This is not about returning your body to who you were before birth. It is about honoring who you are now.
A Ceremony Centered Around You
Every birth and postpartum experience is different, so each Closing of the Bones ceremony is approached with care and intention.
Before we begin, we’ll take time to connect and talk about what you would like this experience to hold. You may want to reflect on your birth, acknowledge emotions that have gone unspoken, celebrate your strength, honor a difficult journey, or simply receive care without needing to do anything for anyone else.
There is no right way to experience the ceremony. You are invited to arrive exactly as you are.
What the Experience May Include
Your Closing of the Bones ceremony may include:
- A welcoming conversation and time to set an intention
- Gentle breathwork and grounding practices
- Space to share or reflect on your birth experience
- Nurturing, body-centered care
- Intentional wrapping of different areas of the body with cloth
- Quiet rest and integration
- A closing reflection to honor your transition
Every element is offered with consent. You remain in control of your experience, and the ceremony can be adjusted to support your comfort, needs, and boundaries.
The Meaning of Being Gathered
Our final visit brings everything together while creating space for the unknowns of birth and the transition into postpartum.During pregnancy and birth, the body makes space in extraordinary ways. Closing of the Bones honors that expansiveness while offering the sensation of being gently contained and supported.
As different areas of the body are wrapped, you are invited to soften, breathe, and receive. The wrapping can create a feeling of grounding and connection—a reminder that your body is worthy of tenderness, gratitude, and care.
For many mothers, the most meaningful part is not any single practice. It is the experience of being fully witnessed and cared for during a season when so much of their energy is devoted to someone else.
More Than Physical Care
Closing of the Bones is not only about the physical body. It also acknowledges the emotional and personal transformation that happens through pregnancy, birth, and motherhood.
This ceremony can offer space to:
- Honor your pregnancy and birth experience
- Acknowledge the person you were before birth
- Welcome the person you are becoming
- Reconnect with a body that may feel unfamiliar
- Make room for emotions without judgment
- Mark the transition into motherhood
- Receive nurturing care without needing to give anything in return
- Feel seen as a whole person—not only as a mother
Nothing needs to be fixed or forced. This is simply a space for whatever you are carrying to be acknowledged with tenderness.
There Is No Expiration Date on Being Held
Closing of the Bones can be experienced during the postpartum season, but it does not have to happen immediately after birth.
Whether it has been days, months, years, or even decades since you gave birth, you are still worthy of having your experience honored. There is no deadline for reconnecting with yourself or receiving the care you may not have had at the time.
Whenever you feel called to pause, reflect, and return to your body, this ceremony can meet you there.
This Ceremony May Be Right for You If…
- You want to honor your pregnancy or birth experience
- You are longing to feel grounded and reconnected to your body
- Your birth unfolded differently than you expected
- You have been focused on caring for everyone except yourself
- You want to intentionally mark your transition into motherhood
- You feel as though your postpartum experience never received closure
- You are moving through an identity shift or new season
- You simply want to be nurtured, witnessed, and held
You do not need a particular story, feeling, or reason to receive this care. Wanting the experience is enough.
A Return to Yourself
Birth asks you to open in every sense of the word. Closing of the Bones creates space to gently gather inward again—not to become who you were before, but to honor everything you have carried and everything you have become.
This is your invitation to pause.
To be cared for.
To be witnessed.
To return to yourself feeling held, centered, and whole.
